How a Tbeatre was Named. . Iu a French journal's sketch of the late1 Sir Michael Balfe occurs an amusing storv of the way the theatre Malibrau, iu Venicer was christened. Balfe was then a baritone singer, and was supporting Malibran in " La Son numbala," being a crowded audience. At the end of the " Ah! non giunge," .Malibran's foot slipped s she trod on a leaf of one of the boqaets that had been flung on the stage, She: would have fallen, but that J3alfe, who' was the Rodolfo, caught her up. Even as it was, her slipper came off and fell into the pit Immediately there was a skirmish for its" possession, and, to create some diversion from that part 'of the house, Malibran deliberately threw the other shop in- au Opposite direction. The curtain fell, and amid deafening cheers the manager led out the prima donna, and announced that his theatre should be called, from the event of the evening, the Theatre Maiibrac, a name which it still re tains.. : . I had been told that she was in the habit of speaking iu the pres ence of her husband of his approach ing and inevitable end, ! and once I attributed much of this to my inform-; anl's imagination , But the other day I had in my own hands and read with my own eyes, the following note writ ten by the lady in question to her wine merchant: "Please send np six Lotties of sherry, six bottles of macou and six bottles of old Scotch whiskey, but if anything should occur in the meantime will you change the whis key for mason ? for when the admiral is in heaven what should I do with the whiskey?" Signed by her lady . ship in full, and she richly deserves that I. should give 'her name to the public. A few hours spent around the Court House will convince any one of this fact if .he is at all observant of passing 1 events, f, -Yesterday , morning during a brief stay there, several poor crea tures made application' tp Deputy Sheriff MoniS and Justice VanAmringe for .assist' ance'and we are told that they jarei almost constantly' beset by , these unfortunatea. One. of ..these, applicants, jesterday., was a woman,, whose sharp- features and wasted f orm told of much suffering, who wanted a coffin in which to bury her deceased hus bahd, who: had been lying dead in the house for two or three days in this warm weather. These par ties were known to Commissioner j Morris, but generally the Committee of the Board of County Commissioners who have to at tend to the matter of issuing orders have to be exceedingly careful to prevent imposi tion by parties who do not actually require the assistance which they crave. This aid has to be dealt out spairingly, loo, as only a limited amount ($20,000) is set apart by the county for the maintenance of its indi gent poor. The way. the sympathies of these officials' arc worked upon is another feature, and their pleadings are sometimes difficult to withstand even where it is abso lutely their duty to ref use the pittance asked for.--.
